About 80% of the population of this island are Sasak,
an ethnic group that is still close to the people of Bali, but the majority
converted to Islam. The rest of the population are people of Bali, Java,
Chinese and Arabic.
Besides Indonesia language as the national language,
the inhabitants of the island of Lombok (especially Sasak), Sasak language as
the main language in everyday conversation. Across the Lombok Sasak language
itself can be found in four kinds of different dialects i.e. dialect of north
Lombok, Central, Northeast and Southeast. In addition with the large number of
natives residing in Bali Lombok (mostly from the former kingdoms of
Karangasem), in some places especially in West Lombok and Mataram Municipality
contained the villages use Balinese language as the language of everyday
conversation.
